One of the most effective and simple ways Mitch Conditt, DDS can help a patient overcome TMJ pain is by using a custom-made oral appliance. Dr. Conditt personally designs all of his splints for each patient so they’re guaranteed to have a comfortable fit and provide effective treatment. Whether a patient is experiencing jaw, face, head, or neck pain, splint therapy is a proven method to help them go away and stay gone.

How Does Splint Therapy Work?

With this approach, a patient simply wears a small, custom-made mouthguard to bed every night. It will slightly reposition the jaw to take any pressure off of the TMJ so that it as well as the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and nerves have a chance to relax and heal. These appliances can also help curtail another common symptom of TMD—unconscious teeth grinding—by placing a protective barrier between the rows of teeth.

Over time, the jaw should adapt to this new position, and a patient will eventually be able to go throughout their day pain and symptom-free. After a few months of consistent use, some patients are able to stop wearing their oral appliance altogether, while others will need to keep using it in order to experience sustained results.
